Carotid Artery Disease

Narrowing of the carotid arteries, the main blood supply to the brain, can cause strokes. Sometimes warning signs, in the form of ‘mini-strokes’ or ‘transient ischaemic attacks’ can develop and require urgent investigation. Surgery can be performed in selected cases to remove the narrowing (a procedure called a ‘carotid endarterectomy’). In the absence of symptoms, surgery is rarely recommended and management of risk factors and medication may be the best option. This might include treatment with aspirin, lowering of blood pressure and blood cholesterol, and stopping smoking.  This can all be discussed with you during your consultation.
